The album was scheduled for a 15 June release. Most retailers found it distasteful and refused to stock the LP because of the art work - so called "Butcher cover".

On June 10, Capitol recalled all copies of the LP from distributors to replace the offending image, as well as items such as promotional posters.

LPs were reissued the same week with a new photo (the Beatles around a steamer trunk) so called  "Trunk cover" pasted over the original one.

Each LP was issued with large poster and four glossy photos of each Beatle.
Capitol added contents/hype stickers to some copies of the record. This album was released originally with an outer wraparound made from coated paper stock. On the front cover �The BEATLES� was embossed (raised). Early copies were issued with a protector sheet placed on the top of each photo. This sheet come in either one of five different colors style.
 
The first press labels contains 7 incorrect song titles :
* "OBLADI OBLADA" later corrected to "OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA"
